Bio

Breaded and battered in the southern spices of Alabama, LeAlan Carter grew up around the sounds of his granddad’s pedal steel guitar and his Dad’s country and classic rock cassettes. At 15 he and several of the other kids in the youth group picked up various instruments to start a praise band and LeAlan chose guitar. That started a journey of 23 years playing guitar in churches and various other bands around the Birmingham area.

For most of his adult life LeAlan suffered from extreme hearing loss and required hearing aids and lip reading to be able to get by in most conversations. In 2022 LeAlan found out his hearing loss was due to a hereditary bone disease and underwent several surgical procedures that restored his hearing. In that restoration, LeAlan discovered a new passion for music in writing and singing Americana, Country, Blues, and Soul and formed The LeAlan Carter band.

“It was life changing. It really helped me find my voice,” LeAlan says. “I’d played guitar, but I hadn’t been confident in my singing until I could hear myself and control my tone.”

Was recovering from this awesome show we had at @elysiangardensbirmingham Saturday night so I didn’t separately record number 5 for my #30DaysOfCovers. Here’s Fire Away by Chris Stapleton and I’ll post number 6 later today!
Here’s number four of my #30DaysOfCovers and with everything {gestures broadly} going on these days, it felt appropriate. This is Ohio, written by Neil Young. But my favorite performance of it is done by @katiepruittmusic as you may can tell by the hat.
For my 2nd #30DaysOfCovers song I have @jasonisbell ‘s Songs That She Sang In The Shower. Jason is by far one of my favorite artists and the flavors of our shared home state that he sprinkles throughout his works really hits the palette just right.
Gonna start up my #30DaysOfCovers again and see how it goes! Here’s a little Help Me Through the Night by Kris Kristofferson. (Edited.. I did say Willie Nelson at first and was flogged in the streets)

Trying out the sonic clarity on this new guitar strap from @kingcole_art you can really tell a difference in the tone. Here’s a little bit of Babe I Know from @nathanielrateliff
So excited to see this guitar strap in person! @kingcole_art has done some amazing work and brought my idea to life! If y’all ever need a really cool custom guitar strap, he’s your man!
I cannot express how amazing it was to play at @shelby_county_arts last night in support for @paulthornmusic I’ve played a lot of places over the years and have never had such an engaged audience that truly cared for the music and the arts. So many people came up after the show and spoke with me and it made my heart so full. The crew at SCAC is phenomenal and put on some of the best shows in the state. Y’al should really check it out.
Some cool reactive visuals I have been working on, the sky is the limit with this stuff and I could spend hours making new presets and such. The tricky part was capturing the little window it generates in Ableton and using it as an input source in Pro Presenter. Now I’ll be able to trigger these types of visuals for solos and such amidst my other video clips.

Now I just need to find more venues that are conducive to this type of show and start booking some stuff out!!
Recently got some more footage back from our show at Old Town Live back in May of this year. Here’s a clip from The Wolf In You which is out on all streaming platforms!

Big thanks to @dennis_calvert for the camera and editing work!

Mom dug this one out of my granddad, L. H. “Lucky” Carter playing down in the basement during one of his sessions.
I’ve been very enamored with the tragic story of The Sky King, a young man named Richard “Bebo” Russell over the last few years. He stole a passenger aircraft at the Seattle-Tacoma airport, took off in it, flew around Mnt Ranier, actually completed a barrel roll and then later crashed the plane away from the major population centers. And here is an original song I am working on about it.

“Broken guy, got a few screws loose, I guess” RIP Sky King #TheSkyKing #skyking #singersongwriter #originalmusic
Had an awesome time at @thenickbham last night for The Birmingham Hootenanny by Bama Roots Radio. Thanks @sleeplesscheyloe for the awesome pics!
From the article in @hooversmag

Shades Mountain is, at its core, a song about home and family. I have lived in 4 different houses on Shades Mountain my whole life. My wife and I’s grandparents started their families on Shades Crest, so our family tree’s roots are profound up here.  My childhood was spent climbing the rocks and bluffs, chasing crawfish in Shades Creek, and building forts on the shady side of the mountain. There is a line in the song that alludes to Shades Mountain being “Heaven’s Bridge” for me, and that just stems from our plans to stay here, until we one day transition to the hereafter.

The very first time we played the song to an audience was in Columbiana, AL for Cowbow days. There was a man who came up to me afterward and talked and talked about how he also grew up on Shades Mountain, how it holds a special place in his heart, and how he always thinks of it as his true home. It’s been amazing seeing how a very personal song about my home has reached others as well.
